Canadian Authorities Seize $83 Million in Cocaine Linked to Mexican Cartel

TORONTO — Authorities in Canada have seized $83 million worth of cocaine linked to the Jalisco New Generation cartel, marking the largest cocaine seizure in Toronto’s history, officials announced Tuesday.

The haul totaled over 835 kilograms of cocaine, with 475 kilograms discovered concealed in a truck and the remainder seized at stash houses, according to Toronto police. The truck and its cargo were part of a larger transnational drug trafficking operation originating in Mexico, police said.

The seizure was part of an ongoing investigation called Project Castillo, which began in August.

Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw emphasized the significance of the operation. “I can tell you that getting 835 kilograms of cocaine off our streets will make a huge difference for the well-being of our communities,” Demkiw stated.

The cocaine was believed to be destined for various Canadian regions, including Newfoundland and British Columbia.

Six people were arrested during the investigation, including two Mexican nationals who entered Canada legally and four Canadians. Arrest warrants have also been issued for three other suspects, including two Mexican nationals and a 60-year-old Canadian from Niagara Falls.

The Jalisco New Generation cartel, known as one of the world’s most violent and prolific drug trafficking organizations, has also been linked to the production and smuggling of fentanyl into the United States. The cartel’s fentanyl pills, often disguised as medications like Xanax and Percocet, have been linked to about 70,000 overdose deaths annually in the U.S.

The investigation remains ongoing.
