A tragic incident occurred on Friday morning in the Town of Excelsior, Sauk County, resulting in the death of a student. The Sauk County Sheriff's Office confirmed that the student was hit by a pickup truck while attempting to board the school bus. According to the investigation, the school bus had stopped on State Hwy. 23/33 near Northwoods Drive at around 7:30 a.m. The student had not yet boarded the bus when a Ford F-150 traveling in the same direction collided with the right side of the bus after the driver failed to slow down in time. The driver then swerved to the right to avoid the bus and hit the student who was crossing the driveway.
Despite efforts by first responders to save the student's life, the student was pronounced dead at the scene. None of the students on the bus were harmed during the accident, and they were taken to Webb Middle School to be reunited with their families. The School District of Reedsburg expressed condolences and assured that resources will be provided for the affected families.
The driver of the pickup truck sustained minor injuries. The names of those involved have not been released as the Sheriff's Office is notifying their families. The crash is still under investigation, and both directions of the highway were closed for almost five hours while authorities conducted their inquiry.
