CHARLOTTE — A single suspect is facing charges of murder, involvement in a shootout, and assaulting a mother, all while on bond for the initial murder charge. Michael Withers, a repeat offender with a lengthy criminal history, was released on Thursday night, accused of a recent assault on his child's mother in Matthews.
Despite Withers' criminal background, he was granted a $75,000 bond by a judge, marking another instance of his release. Withers is also implicated in the shooting death of Haiishen McIntyre, the nephew of Berkley Harmon III, a former High Point University basketball player.
Huntersville police link Withers to McIntyre's 2021 murder, where he previously posted a $500,000 bond. In November of the same year, Withers faced accusations of a shootout in Rowan County, posting a $10,000 bond initially, later increased to $300,000.
Harmon expressed concern about the repeated release of Withers despite his violent history, questioning the effectiveness of the justice system in protecting the community. Despite these concerns, Judge Cecilia Oseguera, who granted Withers bond on Thursday, declined to comment on the matter.
