Blair, Nebraska - A plea of "not guilty" was entered by a man suspected in the fatal stabbing of a Catholic priest at a Fort Calhoun church rectory during his appearance in Washington County Court on Thursday.

Kierre Williams, 43, faced an arraignment Thursday morning on a charge of first-degree murder related to the death of Father Stephen Gutgsell. No trial date has been scheduled yet, and Williams remains incarcerated without bond.

On the morning of Thursday, December 14, 2023, Kierre Williams made a virtual appearance in court via Zoom. Williams faces charges for the murder of Father Stephen Gutgsell, who tragically passed away following an assault in the rectory of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Fort Calhoun, Nebraska, on the morning of Sunday, December 10, 2023.

Prosecutors revealed Williams had no prior association with Father Gutgsell, and it was disclosed in court that he had warrants in five other states. Investigators were unaware of his motives for being in Fort Calhoun. Initial reports suggested Williams hailed from Sioux City, Iowa, but his exact origins remain uncertain, although he was apparently employed at a meatpacking plant in the area.

Father Gutgsell was discovered stabbed in the rectory of a Fort Calhoun Catholic church on Sunday, December 10, and succumbed to his injuries. Authorities reported multiple stab wounds, including to the face and back, with Father Gutgsell making the distress call to 911 himself.

The murder of Father Gutgsell, occurring shortly after the death of Linda Childers in August, has unsettled the tight-knit community.
