The seashore at Cape Hatteras National Seashore in North Carolina has reported the death of a 17-year-old from Chesapeake, Virginia, who was buried under several feet of sand in a hole. The teen was found by his family and friends after parts of an adjacent dune appeared to have collapsed into the hole. The incident occurred just east of an off-road vehicle ramp in Frisco, N.C., and the back-dune area where the hole was located could not be seen from the beachfront.
Rangers, Dare County Emergency Medical Services personnel, and Hatteras Island Ocean Rescue staff responded to a 911 call and tried to revive the teen with CPR, but unfortunately, he could not be saved. An investigation into the incident is ongoing. David Hallac, the
superintendent of National Parks of Eastern North Carolina, extended his condolences to the teen's family and friends and urged visitors to avoid digging deep holes on the beach, given the danger they pose to beachgoers and emergency response staff.
