PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Additional details have been revealed by federal authorities regarding the theft of over 2 million dimes from a tractor-trailer earlier this year. The coins were picked up from the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia and were in transit to Miami.
On April 13, while the truck driver was on a stop in Philadelphia to rest, thieves struck, making off with a portion of the cargo, which amounted to $750,000 in dimes and weighed approximately six tons, as previously reported.
The theft, however, has been clarified to involve $234,500 worth of dimes. Prosecutors now assert that it was part of a string of robberies targeting tractor-trailers passing through the region. These incidents also included the theft of frozen crab legs, shrimp, meat, beer, and liquor.
Surveillance footage captured six individuals, wearing gray hoodies and armed with bolt cutters, approaching the truck during the night of the theft. They broke into the vehicle, loaded the stolen coins into smaller bags, and transferred them to a waiting truck.
According to an indictment unveiled on Friday, thousands of the dimes were later exchanged for cash using coin machines in Maryland or deposited in at least four different suburban Philadelphia banks.
Four individuals from Philadelphia, aged 25 to 32, including Rakiem Savage, Ronald Byrd, Haneef Palmer, and Malik Palmer, now face charges such as conspiracy, robbery, theft of government money, and others.
Efforts to reach out for comments regarding the charges have been made, but responses from the attorneys and individuals involved are pending.
