Jamaica experienced a highly successful winter tourist season in 2023, with a record-breaking 1.18 million tourists visiting the island between January and March. This represents a substantial increase of 94.4% compared to the same period in 2022. The tourism industry has been a significant contributor to Jamaica's economy, with revenue for the first quarter of 2023 reaching $1.15 billion, an increase of 46.4% from the previous year. Jamaica saw a 117% increase in visitors and a 71.4% boost in revenue in 2022 compared to the previous year. The United States was the primary source of tourists to Jamaica in 2022, resulting in record-breaking summer tourism for the Caribbean island. Jamaica's tourism industry is expected to bring in $4.1 billion in revenue in 2024.
Minister of Tourism Edmund Bartlett announced these statistics at Jamaica's Sectoral Debate in parliament, highlighting the tremendous potential of the tourism industry to transform the nation's economy and contribute to the well-being of its citizens. Bartlett also noted that Jamaica's real gross domestic product is anticipated to rise by 3 to 5 percent in the first quarter of 2023 compared to the same period in the previous year, with hotels and restaurants expected to be significant drivers of the increase. The tourism industry has received substantial investment over the past five years, accounting for 20% of the island's total FDI. Bartlett predicts that Jamaica will gain 15,000 to 20,000 hotel rooms as a result of planned investment projects, with a total estimated value of $4 billion to $5 billion over the next five to ten years. Overall, Bartlett is optimistic about the future of Jamaica's economy, with tourism playing a vital role in its success.
