In south-central Colorado, a truck driver lost his life after a train derailed, causing a railroad bridge to collapse on top of his vehicle.
The driver, 60-year-old Lafollette Henderson from Compton, California, was killed when a coal-loaded train plunged from a bridge onto Interstate 25 near Pueblo. The incident happened after 30 of the 124 train cars came off the tracks, scattering coal and wreckage over the highway.
The Colorado Department of Transportation stated that approximately six to seven train cars ended up on I-25. The train also included five locomotives. This derailment resulted in the closure of the interstate in both directions. It will remain closed until the
National Transportation Safety Board concludes its site examination, which could last several days.
The bridge, constructed in 1958, underwent an inspection in 2022. It was a steel girder bridge spanning 188 feet in length and 14 feet in width.
The incident didn't involve any other vehicles. Russell Quimby, a former NTSB accident investigator, suggested that the likely cause of the collapse was the derailed cars hitting the bridge's side, displacing its supporting girders. Investigators will also consider potential sabotage or vandalism in their inquiry.
This year, Colorado has witnessed 11 train derailments, as per Federal Railroad Administration data.
