18-Year-Old Woman Charged with First-Degree Murder After Fatal Shooting Following Traffic Crash

CHICAGO — Aaliyah Cain, 18, has been charged with first-degree murder after allegedly firing a fatal shot at the driver of another vehicle following a traffic collision on July 6, 2024. Cain is being held in custody pending trial.

According to prosecutors, Cain was a passenger in a car with three others when the driver collided with a vehicle driven by 47-year-old Mychal Evans in the 10500 block of South State. The crash left Cain’s car immobilized. She and her companions exited the vehicle, and Evans, possibly fearing for his safety, attempted to flee the scene by making a U-turn.

At this point, prosecutors allege Cain took out a firearm and fired a single shot, striking Evans in the upper left chest. He was later pronounced dead from the wound.

Judge James Murphy ordered Cain’s detention, citing evidence from the other passengers who identified her as the shooter, as well as phone data, video footage, and Cain’s own admissions placing her at the scene of the incident.
