A man has been arrested for allegedly fatally stabbing a woman at the Universal City/Studio City Metro B Line Station early Monday morning. Elliot Tramel Nowden, 45, was detained and is now in jail with a $2 million bail, facing murder charges. He is suspected of the stabbing on a subway train.
The victim, identified as 67-year-old Mirna Soza Arauz, had entered the downtown-bound train at the North Hollywood station. She was attacked in what police say was an unprovoked incident.
The stabbing took place around 5 a.m. in the 3900 block of Lankershim Boulevard. According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, the woman was attacked as she was getting off the train and onto the platform. She was rushed to the hospital but later succumbed to her injuries.
The suspect fled the scene after leaving the train at the same stop as the victim. Witnesses provided police with a description that helped them arrest Nowden about 30 minutes later near Ventura Boulevard and Vineland Avenue.
Investigators believe the incident was unprovoked and are currently working to establish a motive. Due to police activity, the B Line train temporarily bypassed the Universal/Studio stop, and bus bridges were set up for commuters.
Police are urging anyone who may have been targeted by Nowden to come forward and provide information. People can call 877-LAPD-247 or Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS.
The attack adds to a series of recent violent incidents on the Metro transit system. Last week, a Metro bus driver was involved in an altercation with a suspect who shattered the glass door of the bus. In another event, a male passenger was stabbed on a Metro bus in the Silver Lake area, and a suspect was arrested. Later that same day, a Metro bus driver was attacked and stabbed in South Los Angeles.
