A 61-year-old woman from Oklahoma, Rayna Ramos, received a sentence of 18 years to life in prison on Thursday for the fatal shooting of a San Carlos store owner during a robbery over 30 years ago. Ramos, also known as Rayna Hoffman, entered a plea of no contest on September 27 to one count of second-degree murder, acknowledging the use of a firearm in the crime.
The San Mateo County District Attorney's Office revealed that Ramos expressed regret for the murder in a journal, leading to the case's resolution. The 1993 crime occurred at the Devonshire Little Store, where Ramos, acting on her husband's instructions, shot and killed owner Shu Ming Tang during a robbery. In her plea agreement, Ramos admitted to second-degree murder instead of facing a first-degree murder charge.
She was sentenced to pay restitution and a fine, with credit for approximately 2.5 years served. The case remained unsolved for decades until detectives revisited it in 2018 and identified Ramos as a person of interest. The arrest came in March 2022 after authorities discovered Ramos' journal in Oklahoma.
Despite the lack of evidence to prosecute Ramos' husband, the resolution provided a sense of justice for Tang's family. The Devonshire Little Store continued operating until May of this year, following Tang's wife's decision to sell it after his death.
