A fatal accident occurred on Monday morning in East Hollywood on the 101 Freeway, involving multiple vehicles and resulting in the death of a driver who was traveling the wrong way. The California Highway Patrol reported that the accident happened near Melrose Avenue at approximately 4 a.m. The wrong-way driver, operating a red Prius, was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes and collided head-on with a pickup truck. The impact caused the Prius and at least one other vehicle to catch fire.
Emergency services responded to the scene, and the Los Angeles Fire Department pronounced the wrong-way driver dead on site, while another individual was taken to the hospital in unknown condition. Two other people sustained minor injuries but refused transportation. It remains unclear whether the driver who caused the accident was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
The crash led to the closure of most southbound lanes, causing significant traffic congestion during the morning rush hour. However, the freeway fully reopened at approximately 8:30 a.m. following the removal of the wreckage and completion of an investigation into the cause of the accident.
