A depiction of Marcia Shirree Thomas, 14, was created after her body was discovered on September 4, 2009. According to the Irvine Police Department, while Marcia attempted to escape, Zenaido strangled her to death. Gabino then drove the van to a business complex at 1800 Kettering Street in Irvine, where they abandoned her body in the parking lot, poured gasoline over it, and set it on fire. The brothers took her cell phone and fled the scene.

The following morning, employees arriving for work found Marcia's body. Police and homicide detectives responded and began investigating for suspects.

Over a year later, on November 5, 2010, Zenaido’s DNA was matched to the crime due to a 2009 misdemeanor conviction for domestic violence. He was apprehended the next day at a shopping center in Santa Ana, where his older brother Gabino, who was also present, was arrested.

On November 15, 2022, Zenaido was convicted by a jury of first-degree murder and the special circumstance of murder during a kidnapping. Gabino's trial is scheduled for a later date.

"Irvine Police Department has been dedicated to this case since 2009," stated Police Chief Michael Kent. "Our thoughts are with Marcia’s family during this challenging period. We are grateful to the agencies that have provided vital information to support the case and the family."
